The Erie Canal Trail follows the historic Erie Canal through woodlands, farms and 2 villages within Cayuga County. Starting at the County Line coming from Camillus through Jordan, you enter Cayuga County on the trail at Lock 51 and go west on the north side of Rt. 31 on a hard packed stone dust trail. Just west of Bonta Bridge Road, the trail crosses Rt. 31 and you are on the heel path to where you meet Southwest Trail which goes south to the Weedsport High School. You cross Rt. 31 again and follow the heel path past Weedsport Raceway, enter Towpath Road for about a mile and pick up trail across from the town barn. You will pass a Bird Farm. Please do not disturb the birds. Proceed west across Putman Creek and come out at Arby's Fast Food. Proceed south through the Village of Weedsport.


View from trail of Aqueduct and Marshland You pick up the trail west of the Methodist Church in Weedsport, and continue through Aqueduct Park. The trail proceeds west to the Village of Port Byron. While in Port Byron, stop at the Erie House and lock. In Port Byron, you follow Village streets to Rt. 31. Turn right onto Rt. 38 by Jean & Ed's Store, cross over the Thruway, go west on Maiden Lane to Heel Path Road, take heel path to Thomson Road, cross over to Towpath Road and follow path along the water to Craine Brook.

PLEASE NOTE: The bridge is currently out across Craine Brook. An alternate route from Port Byron is the sholder of Rt. 31 to Rt. 90 at Montezuma.

If you cross the brook, you will come out on Rt. 31. Follow Rt. 31 shoulder to Rt. 90, go south to Hamlet of Montezuma, go west on trail to Seneca River to check out the Richmond Aqueduct.

The trail continues north through woods to Rt. 31, where you leave Cayuga County. You may countinue across the bridge and north on the levee to Savannah, N.Y.
