The County prescription drug discount discount program covers all brand or generic prescription medications. Program participants typically save an average 10 to 20
percent on brand name drugs and 20 to 50 percent on generic drugs.
There is no registration required and any resident of Cayuga County, regardless of age, is eligible to receive a free card and participate
in the prescription drug discount card program. The discount card is accepted at most local pharmacies in Cayuga County and at more than
55,000 pharmacies nationwide. Cards can be obtained at any participating pharmacy and used immediately. They are also available at
various county and not-for-profit agencies including the County Clerk's Office.
Since the program cannot be combined with other insurance plans, it is primarily utilized by residents who do not have health insurance
or have limited coverage. Residents with health insurance are able to use the card to purchase prescriptions that are not covered by
their insurance.
The prescription drug discount card program is administered by ProAct, a subsidiary of Kinney Drugs Inc. ProAct is a pharmacy benefit
management company headquartered in New York State.
"The prescription drug discount card is a free and convenient way for county residents to save money on prescription drugs," said
David B. Warner R.Ph., president of ProAct. "There is no charge to individuals, the county or county taxpayers to obtain or use the
cards."
The program was approved by Cayuga County to assist in lowering the costs of prescription drugs for county residents.
"The discount program has been beneficial to residents of Cayuga County," said Cayuga County Legislative Chairman Peter Tortorici.
"We encourage everyone in the County who does not have adequate coverage to participate in this free program."
Other counties in New York State working with ProAct include Franklin, Fulton, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego,
Seneca and St. Lawrence Counties.
