Reportedly the algae had accumulated at the surface of the water, casting a very green color that had a paint-like appearance. The Cayuga County Health Department sent in samples of the algae to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) for identification. The NYSDOH has identified the algae as blue-green algae.
